(Jakarta, 6th) A serious passenger bus accident occurred this morning in Padang Panjang, West Sumatra, Indonesia, resulting in 12 deaths and 25 injuries. The Director-General of the Land Transport Directorate of the Indonesian Ministry of Transport, Ahmad Yani, confirmed in a statement that after the accident, a joint rescue team was dispatched to the scene to carry out rescue operations. He said the bus involved belonged to PT Antar Lintas Sumatera (ALS) company and was originally scheduled to travel from Bukittinggi to Padang.

When approaching the Bukit Surungan station in Padang Panjang, the bus allegedly lost control and overturned, lying on its side off the road. Preliminary investigations based on the license plate number B 7512 FGA indicate that the bus did not hold a valid operating license, and its periodic vehicle inspection was nearing its expiration date (May 14, 2025).

Ahmad Yani urged all bus operators and drivers to conduct regular vehicle inspections and ensure that all operating licenses and documents are legal and valid. He also reminded passengers that they can check the safety and compliance status of the buses they ride through the Ministry of Transport's "Mitra Darat" application.

Meanwhile, the Chief of West Sumatra Police, Gatot Tri Suryanta, noted that among the 12 deceased were 7 men and 5 women, including 2 children. He added that the bus driver and assistant survived and are currently receiving treatment.

"The accident occurred at 8:15 this morning when the bus lost control, crashed into a residential fence, and overturned. Most of the victims were trapped inside the vehicle, and as a result, the rescue operation continued until the afternoon," he said. Currently, the police and the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) have intervened to investigate the cause of the accident, and the Ministry of Transport is in coordination with local transport units and law enforcement agencies.
