Number of Electric Vehicle Charging Facilities Surpasses 20 Million: China Builds World's Largest Charging Network

On the 21st, China’s National Energy Administration released data showing that by the end of December 2025, the number of electric vehicle charging facilities in China had surpassed 20 million, making it the world’s largest electric vehicle charging network, supporting the charging needs of more than 40 million new energy vehicles.

According to the data, as of the end of last year, the total number of electric vehicle charging infrastructure (chargers) in China reached 20.092 million, a year-on-year increase of 49.7%.

Among them, public charging facilities (chargers) totaled 4.717 million, a year-on-year increase of 31.9%, with the total rated capacity of public charging piles reaching 220 million kilowatts and an average power of about 46.53 kilowatts. Private charging facilities (chargers) totaled 15.375 million, a year-on-year increase of 56.2%, with installed electricity capacity for private charging facilities reaching 134 million kilovolt-amperes.

The National Energy Administration pointed out that in 2025, the development of charging facilities in China presents three distinct characteristics. First, the scale is growing faster: it took 13 years from the completion of the first charging station in 2006 to surpass 1 million charging facilities in June 2019; from 1 million to 10 million between June 2019 and June 2024 took 5 years; and from 10 million to 20 million took only 18 months.

Second, charging efficiency has improved, with the rapid deployment of high-powered charging facilities. The average charging power per charger at nationwide public stations reached 46.5 kilowatts, a year-on-year increase in charging efficiency of 33%, significantly enhancing the charging service experience.

Third, coverage is broader, with a cumulative total of 71,500 charging piles built at highway service areas nationwide, covering over 98% of service areas throughout the country, and 19 provinces have realized 'full coverage of every township' with charging facilities.
