According to the Washington Post, former U.S. President Donald Trump recently stated at a fundraising event that if China were to invade Taiwan during his term, he would respond by bombing Beijing. These remarks reportedly left attending donors deeply shocked.
The Independent quoted the Washington Post, noting that at the same event, Trump also said that if he had been in charge at the onset of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, he would have already ordered the bombing of Moscow.
In response to Trump’s hardline comments, China’s Ministry of Defense quickly issued a statement condemning them as “insane and unscrupulous.”
Guillermo, who previously served as the U.S. Ambassador to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) under the Trump administration, recently commented in an interview while in Taiwan that Trump is not an isolationist, but rather hopes to encourage allies to prioritize their own defense. He believes that, should Trump return to the White House, he would continue supporting Taiwan.
In fact, during Trump’s administration, repeated arms sales demonstrated support for Taiwan, and the Biden administration has continued this policy.
Although Trump has rarely discussed the Ukraine issue recently, he claimed last year that if he were in office, he could resolve the Russia-Ukraine war “within a day.”
Additionally, in a Fox News interview this February, Trump openly praised Chinese President Xi Jinping and was asked if he planned to restart the trade war with China that he launched during his first term. While he said he had no intention of reigniting a trade war, he also revealed that he is considering imposing tariffs of more than 60% on Chinese products.
