The Indonesian military stated on the 12th that an explosion in a village in Garut Regency, West Java Province, resulted in the deaths of 4 soldiers and 9 civilians.
Indonesian National Armed Forces spokesperson Yudayana said at a press conference that the explosion occurred in the morning, and at the time, military personnel were destroying a batch of expired ammunition in a designated area belonging to the local Natural Resources Conservation Agency.
He noted that the disposal operations at the first two sites were completed successfully, but an unexpected explosion occurred when preparing the detonating device at the third site. The military is investigating the cause of the explosion.
The military pointed out that civilians were present in the explosion area to collect metal fragments left after the explosion because these remnants still hold some economic value.
It is reported that the site of the explosion is a regular location used by the Indonesian military for destroying expired ammunition and is an open area.
