The incident has raised anxiety, and approximately 4,200 students in Kitakyushu City took leave on the first school day following the incident and did not attend school.
On the evening of the 14th, two third-year junior high school students from the same school were attacked by a man wielding a knife while waiting in line to pay at the McDonald's outlet in the Tokuri area of Kokuraminami-ku, Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture. One 15-year-old girl suffered severe abdominal injuries and died from excessive blood loss. Her male classmate was injured but fortunately not in a life-threatening condition.
The 16th was the first school day after the incident, and parents could be seen driving their children to school that day. The Kitakyushu City Board of Education stated that on that day, approximately 4,200 students from municipal elementary, junior high, and high schools took leave out of anxiety over the incident and did not go to school.
The Fukuoka Prefecture Board of Education has requested that elementary, junior, and high schools within the prefecture keep entrances and exits locked, have students leave school collectively, suspend club activities, and ensure students return home before dark.
