5.7 Magnitude Earthquake in Waters Off Sumatra Island Damages Over a Hundred Houses

A 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck the waters off the coast of Sumatra Island in Indonesia on the 23rd, damaging over 100 houses.

The United States Geological Survey indicated that the earthquake occurred at 2:52 AM local time, at a depth of 68 kilometers, with its epicenter located in the waters near Bengkulu Province.

Indonesia's meteorological agency reported that the earthquake reached 6.0 magnitudes, with a depth of 84 kilometers, and posed no risk of a tsunami.

Meanwhile, Abdul, the spokesperson for the Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency, stated in a press conference that the earthquake damaged more than 100 houses and at least six public facilities in the provincial capital, Bengkulu City.

He said, "A total of 140 houses in Bengkulu City were damaged by the earthquake, including 8 that collapsed and are beyond repair."

He noted that no reports of casualties have been received so far.

Indonesia is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where tectonic activity is frequent, with thousands of earthquakes occurring each year.
