(Kuching, 25th) — Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) President Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum has announced that he will not seek re-election in the upcoming party leadership election.
He said that after consultations with senior party leaders, a unanimous agreement was reached for Deputy President Datuk Seri John Sikie Tayai to serve as acting president and become the candidate for party president.
"I will no longer contest for the position of president. As for the new president, we have unanimously nominated Sikie as a candidate," he told reporters.
Earlier, Salang had also publicly expressed his strong support for Sikie at a dinner held in Bintulu on August 22. The dinner was held in conjunction with the party’s triennial delegates' conference (TDC) roadshow.
"At this dinner, we met with branch committee members from Kakus, Jepak, Tanjong Batu, Samalaju, Kemena, Balaga, and Murum constituencies.
"The purpose of the roadshow is to inform all divisions on how to properly prepare for the upcoming TDC conference.
"It is also to elect a new leadership team so that the party can continue to develop steadily over the next three years," he said.
Regarding whether Sikie has agreed to take over, Salang stated that Sikie has gladly accepted and promised to do his best in the president’s role.
"He also expressed his willingness to give his all and hopes to gain the members’ mandate at the TDC," Salang added.
Next, PRS’s dinner events will continue in Sibu (August 29), Sri Aman (August 30), Miri (September 1), and Kuching (September 3).
PRS is scheduled to hold its delegates’ conference from October 18 to 19. Prior to this, Salang had stated that all key party positions will be open for members to contest.
Previously, there were reports that PRS supreme council member Wilson Nyabong Ijang was interested in contesting for the position of party president.
