Golden Horse Best Supporting Actress Suspected of Mocking Venice's Chaotic Best Actress Award – Xin Zhilei’s '6 Questions' Counterattack

Chinese actress Xin Zhilei won Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival for her role in the film Under the Light, becoming the third actress in the history of Chinese-language cinema to receive this honor. However, Chinese actress Hao Lei, who once won the Golden Horse Award for Best Supporting Actress, was exposed for posting on social media questioning whether this was a result of capital manipulation. Xin Zhilei responded in a post today, hoping everyone can go into theaters and judge for themselves, stating, “Recognition from the audience is my most precious trophy.”

Hao Lei was revealed to have made a post in her social circle, criticizing the unfair judging of the three major international film festivals, believing Xin Zhilei was not qualified to win, and saying, “At Venice, you can win Best Actress just by an actress pulling someone’s hair? Does this Best Actress award still have any value?” However, Hao Lei has not confirmed whether the social media post was indeed made by her.

In response to doubts about her win being “manipulated,” Xin Zhilei raised six consecutive questions: “I really don’t know who’s doing the manipulating? Who should it be with? Is it by paying money? Or some kind of capital exchange? If it could be manipulated, why did it take 14 years before I managed to ‘manipulate’ a Venice Best Actress? Why did they ‘manipulate’ it for me and not someone else?” She stated that she does not know the answers to these questions, and chooses to believe that the jury was moved by her performance, and trusts that film art itself has its purity.
