(Miri, 10th) The Faculty of Engineering and Science at Curtin University Malaysia recently organized a geological field trip for 26 engineering students to Tusan Beach in Bekenu. The visit allowed students to directly observe the unique geological landscape of the area and master field-based geological research techniques.

The university stated that fieldwork is an important link between classroom theory and real-world observation, helping to cultivate students’ critical thinking and observational skills. The field trip was led by faculty scholars and focused on coastal geology, including explanations of sedimentary structures, lithology, stratigraphy, and geomorphology.

On site, students learned to identify rock layers such as sandstone and mudstone, observed bedding, cross-bedding and structural features, and mastered basic techniques such as measuring strike and dip. In addition, they witnessed geological phenomena like faults, folds, and crustal uplift, gaining deeper insight into how plate tectonics have shaped Sarawak’s coastline over millions of years.

The university noted that such field learning not only enhances students’ understanding of geological processes, but also inspires their further interest in exploring earth sciences. In the future, the university will continue to promote immersive practical teaching, cultivating professionals that meet the needs of the geoscience and engineering industries.
