Betting Company Sends Erroneous Winning Notifications, Thousands in Norway Have Their Dreams Dashed

Many Norwegians believed they had become millionaires after receiving notifications of huge winnings from the state-run betting company, only to find out later it was all a big mistake. The Norwegian betting company Norsk Tipping recently stated that on the 27th, thousands of winners of the "Eurojackpot" received notifications with incorrect prize amounts. The company declined to disclose to the BBC the exact number of affected individuals.

According to a BBC report, Norsk Tipping pointed out that an error occurred during the conversion of euros to Norwegian kroner, resulting in excessively high prize amounts. Local media claimed that the prize amounts were multiplied by 100 instead of divided by 100. One woman revealed that she received a notification stating she had won 1.2 million kroner (about 237,000 ringgit), but in fact, she only received a small portion of that.

Norsk Tipping receives the jackpot in euros from Germany and then converts it to Norwegian kroner. The correct amounts have now been updated as of the evening of the 28th.

Norsk Tipping CEO Sagerstuen apologized for the mistake and resigned. She stated, "I am very sorry to have let so many people down, and I understand everyone is angry with us. All I can say to them is sorry, but I know that is only small comfort."

Sagerstuen noted that she was sad to leave the company, but is confident in the “improved processes” that have been implemented.

Minister of Culture and Equality, Jaffery, stated that such mistakes should not occur, especially given Norsk Tipping's exclusive right to provide gambling services. She emphasized that she hopes the company's board will proactively improve control procedures.

This is not the first time Norsk Tipping has faced criticism. The company stated that it has discovered several serious mistakes in recent months and has encountered some technical issues over the past year. The company acknowledged that it has faced harsh criticism from regulators and its customers, and that these criticisms are justified. (News source: Liberty Times)
