KUCHING, Sept 9: Some 200 students from six secondary schools in Kuching were given the opportunity to learn science the fun way through hands-on experiments and workshops at the PETRONAS Powering Knowledge: Discover PETRONAS @Schools TVET Kuching programme yesterday.
Held at CENTEXS Santubong, the one-day event featured engaging activities such as the “Ramp-It” challenge, where students explored aerodynamics by designing and racing their own mini cars down a ramp at maximum speed.
The participating schools were SMK Santubong, SMK Bandar Samariang, SMK Demak Baru, SMK Tun Abang Haji Openg, SMKA Tun Ahmad Zaidi and Kolej Datu Patinggi Abang Haji Abdilah.
In addition, CENTEXS facilitated a series of lab workshops covering oil and gas, smart building systems, electrical technology, digital innovation, and green energy, aimed at sparking students’ interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) as well as Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
According to PETRONAS, the initiative is part of its nationwide outreach to promote the PETRONAS Education Sponsorship programme and to nurture young talents in line with the company’s Sustainability Agenda and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 on quality education.
Last year, similar Discover PETRONAS @Schools programmes in Sri Aman, Miri, Gedong and Kapit reached more than 650 students, while earlier this year, events in Mukah, Baram and Sibu engaged another 570 students.
Through these efforts, PETRONAS reaffirms its commitment to support Sarawak’s education and human capital development by encouraging the younger generation to pursue future careers in STEM and TVET fields.
