MIRI, 25 April – Sarawak Oil Palms Berhad (SOP) recently collaborated with the Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) to jointly host the 'Certificate of Tourism-Related Education' (CTRE) Program at their Miri headquarters. This program aimed to enhance registered tour guides' understanding and awareness of the local palm oil industry.
The event attracted more than 40 licensed tour guides from various regions, led by Razita Abdul Razak, Assistant General Manager of Sustainability, Promotions & Communications at MPOC. SOP was represented by their Head of Sustainability, Galau Melayong, who warmly received the participants and delivered a briefing on SOP's practices and commitments in promoting sustainable palm oil development.
During the event, tour guides gained an in-depth understanding of the overall Malaysian palm oil industry structure, the health and nutritional benefits of palm oil, and the industry's efforts in environmental protection and sustainable development. Additionally, the event focused on correcting common public misconceptions about palm oil, enabling guides to convey accurate and neutral information to visitors both domestically and internationally.
Galau highlighted the significance of this initiative by MPOC in bridging the gap between the palm oil industry and the public.
'By imparting this knowledge, tour guides become vital bridges in disseminating sustainable and truthful information.'
A highlight of the event was the launch of MPOC's specially designed educational module for tourism professionals, covering the environmental impact, industry standards, and the role of palm oil in daily life, aiding guides to effectively introduce relevant information to tourists.
Furthermore, the event included a guided tour of SOP's plantation operations, led by the estate manager, allowing guides to observe SOP's planting management practices and sustainable practices up close.
SOP expressed its honor in supporting MPOC's educational and promotional endeavors, committing to continually improve public understanding, transparency, and active participation in the palm oil industry.
