The 13th Miri International Deep Sea Fishing Championship to be held from May 20 to 24

(Miri, 23rd) To ensure the smooth holding of the '13th Miri International Deep Sea Fishing Championship 2025', a preparatory coordination meeting organized by the Miri Anglers Club was held at 2:30 pm today in the Miri Resident's Office meeting room, gathering representatives from various sectors to conduct in-depth discussions on topics such as event organization, safety, and environmental protection measures.
 
The meeting was chaired by the Deputy Minister of Tourism of Sarawak and Pujut Assemblyman, Dato' Sebastian Ting, with attendees including Miri Resident,  Galong anak Luang, Chairman of the Miri Anglers Club,  Brian Ang , and representatives from related government and enforcement agencies, including the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM), the Malaysian Maritime Department, the Sarawak Department of Fisheries, the Sarawak Forestry Corporation, and the Miri City Council.
 
Dato' Sebastian Ting stated at the meeting that this event not only showcases Miri's world-class deep-sea fishing resources but also promotes the development of the local tourism industry, thereby boosting the coastal community's economy.
 
“Collaboration among various agencies is key to ensuring the international event is safe, orderly, and environmentally friendly. We must be fully prepared to ensure every participant and spectator can enjoy an unforgettable and safe fishing experience.”
 
The meeting focused on discussions about maritime safety and emergency response mechanisms, vessel traffic scheduling and management, environmental protection measures and waste management arrangements, as well as registration and supervision procedures for participating fleets.
 
The 13th Miri International Deep Sea Fishing Championship will take place from May 20 to 24, 2025, and is expected to attract around 100 anglers from both local and abroad, competing as individuals or in teams of four in the renowned Luconia Shoals waters.
 
The event will kick off with a departure ceremony on May 20 at 9 am, at Marina Bay, officiated by Dato' Sebastian Ting. The fishing schedule will run from May 20 to 23, with the return time set before 9 am on May 24, and the award ceremony will be held on May 24 at 11 am at the Marina Bay waterfront, officiated by the Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato' Amar Abdul Karim.
 
The total prize money for the competition is RM 50,000 in cash plus RM 20,000 in fishing gear prizes. This international fishing event not only serves as a platform to showcase Sarawak's marine biodiversity but also plays an important role in promoting Miri as a world-class fishing tourism destination, highlighting the Sarawak government's comprehensive strategic goals in sports tourism, environmental protection, and local economic development.
