(KUCHING, 26th) The Sarawak government is actively taking proactive measures and continuously amending existing laws to better align with the development of the times and current needs.

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari pointed out that he has instructed the Sarawak State Attorney-General's Chambers to establish a research group, responsible for a comprehensive review of Sarawak's laws, especially those outdated statutes.

“In the past, the Attorney-General's Chambers did not have a 'research group', now we have set up the related unit. I have also instructed former Sarawak Attorney-General Datuk Seri Talat Mahmood Abdul Rashid to carry out a special study to reassess our existing laws, including the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and other old laws. If the statutes are related to trade, we must also consider them comprehensively to ensure the laws are in line with Sarawak's role.”

He said this while addressing the gratitude dinner hosted by the Sarawak Ministry of Natural Resources and Urban Development last night.

Abang Johari emphasized that reviewing and updating Sarawak's laws is crucial, especially the statutes concerning trade, environment, and investment, to ensure Sarawak's legal system remains modern and competitive in the rapidly changing global environment.

At the end of the dinner, he also presented the 2024 Sarawak Ministry of Natural Resources and Urban Development Excellence Service Award, and gave tokens of appreciation to employees who are retiring or being transferred.
