Petition to Impeach Vice President Met with ‘Cool Response’ by Indonesian Parliament

(Jakarta, 26th) On the first day of the new session of Indonesia’s House of Representatives, not a word was mentioned regarding the petition to impeach Vice President Gibran. Analysts pointed out this was to be expected, as President Prabowo’s alliance with Gibran’s father, former president Jokowi, remains strong, making it unlikely that the House would support Gibran’s impeachment.
The Jakarta Post reports that the House originally expected to submit the impeachment case at a plenary session on Tuesday (June 24), but at that day’s meeting, the petition was not addressed in any way before the meeting ended.
House Speaker Puan later said when questioned that the petition to impeach Gibran had not yet reached her office and was still under review by the parliamentary secretariat. Puan is from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle, the largest party in parliament, and the only opposition party in Indonesia’s House of Representatives.
Great Indonesia Movement Party’s (Gerindra) Deputy House Speaker Sufmi stated that this type of petition must be discussed in a leadership meeting before being submitted to the plenary session for a vote.
He added that the House leadership may hold a meeting next week to discuss the petition in question and emphasized that the House will act cautiously, thoroughly reviewing the petition before making any formal decision.
However, constitutional law expert Zainal from Gadjah Mada University believes that as long as the alliance between Prabowo and Jokowi remains, even if there is sufficient legal basis, the House is unlikely to support the advancement of this impeachment case.
Ray, director of the Indonesian think tank Lingkar Madani, pointed out that all parties—including Gerindra (Prabowo’s party)—may intentionally set aside this petition as a bargaining chip for future political negotiations.
He also said that Prabowo and most major political parties have yet to make a clear statement on the impeachment case, suggesting the issue may not be resolved anytime soon. “There may be no result within a year—it could take until three years before the House addresses it.”
Gibran is Jokowi’s eldest son. A group of retired Indonesian generals formally launched a petition in early June, calling on parliament’s two chambers to initiate the legal process to impeach Gibran. They questioned Gibran’s fitness for the vice presidency and pointed out possible constitutional violations when the Constitutional Court previously cleared obstacles for Gibran’s vice presidential candidacy.
