(Kuching, 20th) Sarawak Premier’s Department Minister Datuk Seri John Sikie Tayai was yesterday appointed as the new president of Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS), succeeding Datuk Salang Gandum, with a term from 2025 to 2028.
This announcement was made on the final day of the 6th triennial PRS Delegates Conference (Persidangan Tiga Tahun Sekali Ke-6 PRS).
75-year-old John Sikie won the election with 186 votes, defeating Pelagus state assemblyman (Ahli Dewan Undangan Negeri, ADUN) Wilson Nyabong Ijang, who received 154 votes, winning by a majority of 32 votes.
A total of 344 registered delegates from 38 party branches participated in the voting, with 3 abstaining. Of the 341 ballots cast, 340 were valid and 1 was invalid.
This election marks a leadership transition, as Salang, who served as PRS president since 2022, announced his resignation to make way for a new generation of leaders.
PRS is a component party of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition — holding 11 seats in the state legislative assembly and 5 seats in the federal parliament.
Last Saturday, Deputy Minister of Port and Infrastructure Development (Timbalan Menteri Pembangunan Pelabuhan dan Infrastruktur) Datuk Majang Renggi was automatically elected as deputy president as there were no other candidates, after Deputy Minister of Creative Industry and Performing Arts Tourism (Timbalan Menteri Pelancongan Industri Kreatif dan Seni Persembahan) Datuk Snowdan Lawan withdrew from the race in the interest of party unity.
In the women's wing election held yesterday, Sri Aman MP (Ahli Parlimen Sri Aman) Datuk Seri Doris Sophia Brodie continued as chairperson for the 2025–2028 term, being re-elected unopposed at the delegates conference.
Vice-chairs are Agnes Undil and Donna Petrus Ngelai, the secretary is Misiah Abdullah, treasurer is Gawai Enggong, and information chief is Jenny Crystal Mansang.
In the PRS Youth Wing (Pemuda PRS) election, there was a contest for the chairperson’s post between Tamin state assemblyman (ADUN Tamin) Christopher Gira Sambang and Murum state assemblyman (ADUN Murum) Kennedy Chukpai Ugon.
Vice-chairperson Surai Anthony Abell remains in office unopposed, while the two other vice-chair positions required no voting due to candidate withdrawals.
