(Miri, 18th) — The Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) held a large-scale tree planting activity this morning at Piasau Nature Reserve, Miri, planting 2,500 native seedlings as part of the 'ecoGreenPlanet' initiative. The cumulative total has now reached 6,200 trees, accounting for 62% of the target of 10,000 trees.

This initiative, jointly launched by STB and the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) in 2023, aligns with the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), and aims to promote ecological restoration, biodiversity conservation, and responsible tourism.

STB Chairman Dato Dennis Ngau said that today is not just about planting trees, but also about sowing hope and a sense of responsibility. He emphasized that Sarawak is taking active steps in sustainable development, moving beyond mere rhetoric to real action.

He said this tree planting activity is expected to offset about 1,085 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions within the next ten years, further demonstrating the state’s commitment to climate action.

This event is also included as part of the Rainforest World Music Festival 2025’s sustainability series, with other green measures including the introduction of a shuttle bus system to reduce transport emissions; installation of solar-powered charging and lighting facilities supported by Sarawak Energy; recycling over 1,300 used wristbands into handcrafted lanyards produced by single mothers in Sarawak; collaborating with SD Guthrie to turn used cooking oil into biodiesel; and setting up educational booths to promote wildlife conservation, recycling, and carbon footprint tracking.

The 'ecoGreenPlanet' initiative is also aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including Responsible Consumption (SDG 12), Climate Action (SDG 13), and Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17).

The Sarawak Tourism Board expresses its gratitude to the Sarawak Forestry Corporation, Miri City Council, enterprises, and the public for their strong support in jointly promoting responsible tourism and a green future for Sarawak.
