Myanmar Piglets Divided into Hierarchy: Taiwanese Valued Lowest, Japanese Highest

Published at May 21, 2025 10:50 am
This February, under international pressure, the Myanmar government launched a crackdown on multiple scamming zones across the border, gradually rescuing a large number of trapped "piglets". A Taiwanese individual who escaped from the Baisheng zone revealed to Taiwanese media on the 20th that people in the scam zones are divided into hierarchical classes. The value of Taiwanese is the lowest, with each valued at an average of 300,000 New Taiwan dollars (42,700 Malaysian Ringgit).

Ah Hong stated that there are people from all kinds of countries in the zone, "countries you've heard of and haven't heard of"; the majority are from mainland China, while Japanese nationals are valued the highest. Purchasing a Japanese piglet requires at least 900,000 New Taiwan dollars (128,100 Malaysian Ringgit) to 1.5 million New Taiwan dollars (213,500 Malaysian Ringgit), because the Japanese market has not yet been developed, offering a large space for fraud, and it's easier for Japanese to scam Japanese.

Ah Hong recalled that the performance pressure within the zone was immense, and every month, he had to pay the company about 23,000 New Taiwan dollars (3,275 Malaysian Ringgit) for accommodation and meals. During a six-month period, he managed to scam three Taiwanese individuals, just enough to barely survive in the zone.

Ah Hong further pointed out that after witnessing the scam industry's operations, he believes it's impossible to crack down on fraud, because no matter what policies the government enacts, scam groups always have countermeasures. For example, when one-way tickets cannot gain entry, groups provide return tickets. Current police efforts only catch the small roles at the bottom, because all the truly important and profitable operations are abroad. Large sums of money are converted to virtual currency through cryptocurrency merchants and are entirely transferred out, making it impossible to trace.
