Li Qiang Meets Uruguayan President, Willing to Defend Common Interests of the Global South

On the 3rd, Chinese Premier Li Qiang met with visiting Uruguayan President Orsi at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, emphasizing that China fully supports Uruguay in assuming the rotating presidency of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, the Southern Common Market, and the 'Group of 77 and China.' China is willing to closely coordinate and communicate with Uruguay in multilateral settings to promote higher-level China-Latin America cooperation, China-Southern Common Market cooperation, and South-South cooperation, uphold multilateralism and free trade, maintain international order and fairness and justice, and defend the common interests of the Global South.

Li Qiang stated that China is willing to work with Uruguay, following the strategic guidance of the two countries' heads of state, to firmly support each other on issues concerning each other's core interests, to actively share opportunities on the path to common development, and to promote deeper and more practical mutually beneficial cooperation. China is also willing to continue to adhere to openness and win-win cooperation with Uruguay, strengthen development strategies alignment and market connectivity, fully tap the potential of cooperation in various fields, further leverage complementary advantages, and create more pragmatic results.

He suggested that both sides should make good use of mechanisms such as the Joint Committee on Economic and Trade Cooperation and the Joint Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation, to expand and optimize the scale and structure of bilateral trade, jointly promote scientific and industrial innovation, explore cooperation in artificial intelligence, green economy, digital technology, biomedicine, as well as strengthen cooperation in culture, sports, youth, localities, tourism and other areas. Orsi, for his part, stated that Uruguay firmly abides by the one-China principle, looks forward to close high-level exchanges and dialogues at all levels with China, actively participates in joint Belt and Road construction, deepens exchanges and cooperation in various fields, and brings greater benefits to the two peoples.

On the same day, Orsi also met with Zhao Leji, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, expressing hope to deepen cooperation in areas such as economy and trade, investment, environment, and the humanities, strengthen friendly exchanges between legislative bodies, and learn from each other's legislative experience to continuously promote the development of China-Uruguay relations. Zhao Leji stated that the National People's Congress of China is willing to strengthen exchanges and mutual learning in legislation, supervision, governance, and administration with the Uruguayan parliament, so as to provide a good legal environment for deepening pragmatic cooperation.
