Starting from August 1, the United States will raise the tariff rate on Canadian exports to the US from 25% to 35%, to which Canada has expressed disappointment.
Canadian Prime Minister Carney issued a statement noting disappointment over President Trump's executive order raising the tariff rate on Canadian exports to the US to 35%.
The statement said that Canadian industries such as lumber, steel, aluminum, and automobiles have been severely impacted by US tariff policies, and the Canadian government will take action to protect Canadian jobs and achieve export market diversification.
According to the executive order signed by Trump, goods that meet the preferential tariff treatment conditions of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) will not be affected by the latest tariff measures.
The White House announcement stated that, as Canada failed to cooperate with the US on controlling the influx of fentanyl and other illicit drugs into the United States, and instead took retaliatory measures against the US, the US deemed it necessary to impose additional tariffs on Canadian goods.
