(Putrajaya, 21st) The federal government and Sarawak signed a joint declaration today, reaching a consensus on issues related to the National Petroleum Company (Petronas) and Sarawak Oil Company (Petros).

Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar and Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari signed the declaration at the Prime Minister's Office.

Finance Minister Anwar stated at a joint press conference that the signing of this positive consensus regarding Petronas and Sarawak Oil aims to promote the development of Malaysia and Sarawak.

"This is achieved through the two major companies, Petronas and Sarawak Oil. In principle, this matter was already agreed upon, as I had clearly outlined when negotiating with the Premier, which involves accepting the reality granted by the 1974 Petroleum Development Act and Sarawak's 2016 Gas Distribution (Amendment) Ordinance.

"This means that the current situation requires us to accept the fact that Sarawak is developing, becoming more mature, and more capable, including establishing a state oil company with great potential."

Anwar noted that the consensus reached this time will ensure that the status of Petronas remains undisturbed, while the role of Sarawak Oil as Sarawak’s oil and gas company is also acknowledged.

"The role of Petronas is not threatened because it continues to play its part, but at the same time, considering the new developments, granting powers to the state of Sarawak and the role of Sarawak Oil.

"Therefore, the consensus we reached aims to ensure that Petronas can continue its operations and that the role of Sarawak Oil in Sarawak is recognized, with both working together to enhance the nation's position in the oil and gas industry."

Anwar noted that the government also intends to make Sarawak the initial hub for the ASEAN oil and gas industry.

"To me, this is a very realistic proposition and will bring victories and success in elevating Sarawak’s economic status."

Attendees included Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy and Water Transition Dato' Seri Fadillah, Sarawak’s Minister of Utilities and Communications Dato' Seri Julaihi Narawi, and Minister of Works Dato' Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

Other attendees were Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki, Attorney General Dato' Mohamad Dusuki, and Sarawak's Solicitor-General Dato' Shafie.

On February 17, Anwar stated that the federal government and the Sarawak state government recognized Sarawak's intention to participate in oil industry activities in the state.

The report quoted Anwar's remarks, stating that this intention has been reflected through the Gas Distribution (Amendment) Ordinance and will take effect on March 1, 2025.
