Golden Horse Best Actress Sandra Ma, Gwei Lun-mei, supermodel Lin Chi-ling, and Chinese actor Jackson Yee recently attended the FIRST Youth Film Festival in Xining, Qinghai. Sandra Ma, as the curator of the film festival, participated in many events over consecutive days. When asked how she connects with her roles, she said that over the years, she has seen many relatively unknown new actors perform very well, and she is still in a learning state herself. She once again mentioned her past struggle with depression: “These years, my approach to filming has changed. I used to think I must become the character completely, whether it was for 'The Left Ear' or 'Soul Mate'. Later, after filming many movies and TV series, I realized that if you become that person two hundred percent, you'll lose your own life. You become too stubbornly stuck in a dream and unwilling to wake up. I remember a teacher once told me, ‘If you continue like this, you’ll lose your life.’ Your own life will be destroyed. As it turned out, I did experience some things that negatively affected my own life. In the past two years, I have changed. Instead of becoming the character, I shifted to paying attention to everyone around me and observing life. This is what can better nourish your role. Right now, I am in the process of stepping out of this.”
As for Jackson Yee becoming the youngest main competition jury member in history, he said that his approach to being a judge this year was to have fun, relax, and learn. As a singer, he also said that he particularly liked the musical components in the competition: “I cast my vote for the musical aspect of one of the films.”
