(Thailand, 7th) Incoming Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has pledged that his government will uphold transparency and the rule of law, and will never “retaliate” against opponents.
Anutin made this statement during his speech after successfully gaining support from the parliament on Friday evening, becoming Thailand’s 32nd Prime Minister. He thanked all Members of Parliament, including those from the opposition People's Party (PP), regardless of whether they voted for or against him, expressing gratitude to all and emphasizing the importance of national unity to move forward.
Anutin said: “I hope everything can conclude in a positive atmosphere, so that we can join hands and work hard for the people and the country. If we unite, we can achieve our goals and make up for lost opportunities.”
As for his priorities after taking office, Anutin did not reveal details but promised to act swiftly.
Addressing concerns about the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) – a document he signed to gain the People's Party’s support, of which Article 4 stipulates that he is not to seek to form a majority government before dissolving the parliament within four months – Anutin responded: “All agreements were reached in good faith. Please do not stir up further disputes. I am always known for avoiding conflict and reconciling opponents, and I wish to maintain this quality.”
“I will not engage in retaliation. The law must be enforced fairly—no favoritism, no persecution,” he said.
Regarding the Supreme Court’s impending ruling on the ‘14th Floor Case’ involving former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra this coming Tuesday, the cabinet formation, and the “Khao Kradong land dispute” involving his Bhumjaithai Party, Anutin stated that everything would be decided according to the law.
Responding to concerns over whether the Khao Kradong land case would “never disappear” under his rule, Anutin insisted: “Assets belonging to the nation must remain with the nation. Everything will be handled according to the law, justly, transparently, and will not be subject to political manipulation.”
At Government House, acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai said that the current Pheu Thai-led government “has fulfilled the duties entrusted by the people, and will step down as soon as the new cabinet is sworn in and delivers its policy statement.”
