Rampant Online Fraud, Government Cannot Shirk Responsibility—Xinmin Party Urges RM5 Billion Compensation Fund, Legislation to Allow Victims to Sue Negligent Banks

Malaysia Xinmin Party President Chan Si Yuan pointed out that online scams have been rampant for a long time, not only failing to be eradicated but actually becoming increasingly severe. He stated that successive governments and the relevant banks cannot shirk responsibility, and must be held accountable for 'inefficiency', lack of proper supervision, and dereliction of duty in protecting people's property.

Therefore, Chan suggested that the government allocate a special fund of RM5 billion to provide partial compensation to scam victims over the years. At the same time, he called for legislation to empower victims with the right to sue negligent banks and to compel them to pay compensation; under no circumstances should these banks be allowed to 'get off scot-free'.

Chan revealed in a statement today that since the Xinmin Party's establishment was announced on the 27th of last month, in just 12 short days, it has already received 7 complaints about scams.

He said that looking at news reports over the years, scam incidents occur every single day, and almost everyone has relatives, friends, or even they themselves who have fallen victim to scams. It can be said that the number of victims easily reaches tens of thousands, or even more; in fact, most Malaysians are direct or indirect victims of scams and their after-effects.

He pointed out that scams have long become a nightmare or an invisible 'landmine' that Malaysians deeply abhor. But successive governments seem to merely sigh at these ‘landmines’; in other words, the government is obviously highly suspect of being inefficient, lacking in supervision, and derelict in their duty to protect people's property, and must bear responsibility for people's losses.

'The above-mentioned special allocation is merely a patch-up measure to provide victims with part of the compensation they deserve. To address the root cause, the government must seriously strengthen efforts to eradicate fraudsters, so as to once and for all relieve the people from the nightmare of scams.'

Chan also sincerely added, 'Pies won't fall from the sky, and fraudulent online networks are definitely laying traps'; the most effective 'prescription' for self-protection against scams is to rid oneself of greed.
