On the 17th, US President Trump said that after the issue of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz was resolved, he received phone calls from NATO allies, but he believes NATO “is just a paper tiger,” “utterly useless.”
Trump wrote on social media: “Now that the situation in the Strait of Hormuz has calmed down, I received a call from NATO, asking if we needed any help. I told them to stay away, unless they just want to come (to the US) to fill their ships with oil. When we needed them, they were of no use, just a paper tiger!”
Trump has repeatedly criticized NATO allies for being unwilling to help the US combat Iran, and has often described NATO as a “paper tiger.”
In response to Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi announcing the “complete opening” of the Strait of Hormuz on the 17th, Trump immediately posted 11 updates on social media, detailing the current US position and developments in the Middle East. The posts included criticism of NATO.
