Azam Baki: Establishment of Ombudsman Malaysia — No Overlapping of Powers with MACC

With the impending establishment of the Ombudsman Malaysia, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) assures that there will be no overlapping of authority when handling issues of integrity and governance.

MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki pointed out that the core task of the commission is investigation and enforcement, while also leading educational and advocacy programs related to integrity and governance in society.

He said the MACC will also participate in prevention efforts and provide recommendations to government agencies with corruption and governance issues.

He made these remarks to reporters today (10th) after attending and delivering a keynote speech at the “2025 MACC-UiTM Inspiration: Integrity and Leadership Day” event at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM).

"Apart from MACC, there are also other departments and agencies under Ombudsman Malaysia, such as the Royal Malaysia Police. The detailed jurisdictions will be announced separately."

"The government has made it clear there will be no overlap of authority, and I also guarantee that the work carried out by MACC in the future will not face the same situation (of overlapping jurisdiction)."

Attendees included UiTM Vice-Chancellor Professor Datuk Shahrin Sahib.

Azam Baki stated that MACC will fully cooperate in the formulation of the Ombudsman Malaysia Bill, which is expected to be tabled in Parliament in the middle of next year.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar, on Monday, said the government will set up Ombudsman Malaysia as the central agency for managing and resolving public complaints, with broader jurisdiction encompassing administrative misconduct, malpractice, whistleblower protection, and freedom of information.

He stated that this was among the major consensuses achieved at the Special Cabinet Committee on Governance meeting (JKKTN), reflecting the MADANI government’s strong commitment to drive institutional, policy, and legal reforms.
