78-year-old veteran Hong Kong actor Law Kar-ying publicly revealed in May that his prostate cancer had relapsed—marking his fourth battle with cancer. However, this time he chose not to undergo traditional chemotherapy or radiotherapy; under his doctor’s advice, he is receiving female hormone injections to suppress the spread of cancer cells.
According to Hong Kong media reports, Law Kar-ying first discovered cancer cells on the right side of his liver in 2004 and had them surgically removed. Ten years later (in 2014), cancer cells were found on the left side of his liver, requiring another surgery. Three years ago, cancer cells were detected in his prostate. The situation was more severe and required complete prostate removal, but he showed no signs of panic, even joking, “Just remove whatever can be removed.”
Facing a fourth cancer diagnosis, Law Kar-ying said he is currently performing in a new stage play. When he asked his doctor about treatment options, the doctor suggested that he could receive injections and take medicine to slow down the progression of the cancer cells. However, the medication’s side effects caused fatigue, so to avoid impacting his performances, he only takes the meds after his shows end.
However, Law Kar-ying also admitted that this kind of treatment needs to continue for seven to eight years before showing results. In the future, if he needs to undergo chemotherapy or radiotherapy, he would already be 88 years old. “I am 79 years old this year, so I know I only have eight years left. In fact, I feel quite happy about it and am not afraid at all. When the time comes, I’ll tell everyone I’m leaving, and we’ll meet in heaven—or in the next life.”
