(Kanowit, 11th) SMK Kanowit’s Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) results have improved for five consecutive years, consistently surpassing the national average, giving its students a greater advantage in benefiting from the Sarawak state government’s free higher education scheme for further studies.
Datuk Anuar Rapaee, Sarawak Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, stated that this achievement can be seen in the increasing number of students obtaining 5As or above, with over 50 students qualifying for the Sarawak government university foundation programme.
He said this trend must be complemented with clear further education guidance, especially for students advancing to Form Four and Five next year, allowing them to select subject combinations that match university courses under the free education scheme.
He said, “I emphasize to teachers and the principal that students must be sufficiently briefed, especially when choosing Group A and Group C subjects, so they can truly benefit from the free higher education policy offered by the Sarawak government.”
He stated this during his visit to SMK Kanowit yesterday.
During his inspection, Anuar Rapaee also expressed satisfaction with the newly constructed school building, considering its quality far superior to the old building.
“However, laboratory and furniture facilities still need further enhancement,” he added.
He pointed out that the school has also applied to build new dormitories due to the current facilities being too small.
“They hope to build new dorms, because the existing boys’ and girls’ dormitories are both of scale 6 (small dormitories). If it can be included in the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13), we will expedite the process; if not, we will seek other ways to ensure the dormitory facilities can be improved,” he said.
