(Bandar Seri Begawan, 25th) The Brunei delegation recently attended the inaugural ASEAN Monitoring and Reporting Workshop on the Implementation of the Bali Work Plan to Prevent and Combat Trafficking in Persons 2.0 (BWP 2.0) MERL Framework, held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to strengthen efforts against human trafficking crimes and promote regional cooperation.
The delegation members included officials from the Security and Legal Division of the Prime Minister’s Office and the Human Trafficking Investigation Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Royal Brunei Police Force.
The two-day seminar was held from July 22 to 23, 2025, and was co-organized by the ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Transnational Crime (SOMTC) – Philippines – Malaysia and the ASEAN-Australia Counter Trafficking (ACT) Program.
This seminar was specifically designed for National Action Plan Executing Agencies (NAR) and SOMTC focal points, aiming to provide training on how to prepare MERL results chart reports to facilitate the completion of the Joint Results Report for the ‘ASEAN Plan of Action against Trafficking in Persons 2.0 (2025)’.
BWP 2.0 centers on four main pillars (4P): Prevention, Protection, Prosecution, and Partnership, serving as a common framework for ASEAN member states to combat human trafficking.
The seminar attracted 33 representatives from 10 ASEAN member countries and observer country Timor-Leste, including SOMTC, NAR, and various ASEAN agencies.
Through this event, participants gained an in-depth understanding of their roles in MERL implementation, namely being responsible for compiling, reviewing, evaluating, and reporting on their country’s progress in implementing BWP 2.0, and supporting the continuous optimization of relevant policies.
