The heat wave from Thailand's Songkran Festival (Water Festival) has not yet dissipated, and a video has sparked public discourse in Thailand.
In the video, several Chinese female tourists stand on a rented water tanker, wielding high-pressure water guns to 'indiscriminately spray' at the street crowds, causing bystanders to scream and dodge. Some applauded and cheered, while others angrily condemned, even sarcastically commenting, "This is the power of money."
What was supposed to be a traditional festival celebrated by all has now been entangled in a vortex of cultural clash due to this 'aerial water assault.' The public discourse spread quickly, with many Thai netizens expressing their dissatisfaction in the comments section, questioning whether the behavior had crossed the line:
"Is this joy? It's illegal!" "Are they using high-pressure water guns? That's really dangerous!" "Spraying water at motorcyclists, such behavior is highly irresponsible."
Some netizens even recognized the vehicle in the video, claiming it was previously stopped by police on Bangkok's famous Khao San Road.
Following the incident, Thailand's Central Investigation Bureau issued an unusual warning through its official account: "Songkran cannot be taken lightly!" and reiterated the relevant legal provisions: throwing water without someone's consent or if there is a risk of danger can result in fines or up to three years in prison.
In fact, Songkran is one of Thailand's most important traditional festivals, attracting a large number of domestic and international tourists to participate in the street water-splashing celebrations every April, creating a vibrant atmosphere.
However, in the ocean of joy, how to strike a balance is becoming an increasingly prominent social issue.
Thai media pointed out that while Thailand still welcomes Chinese tourists to visit, "having fun" does not mean "crossing the line." Cultural respect and behavior norms are the baseline that cannot be ignored in any festive activity.
Industry insiders call for improved cultural understanding and awareness of boundaries as tourist behavior becomes more diverse. The joy of the Water Festival is built on mutual respect and safety.
