(Seria, 23rd) The Industrial and Business Ecosystem Division of the Ministry of Finance and Economy, through the Weights and Measures Unit (SDT) and the Consumer Affairs Division, conducted a joint operation at three commercial premises in Kampong Kabu, Belait District.
During the operation, SDT officers found that twelve weighing and measuring instruments used for transactions were in compliance with Chapter 151 of the Weights and Measures Act 1983 and the Weights and Measures (Verification) Regulations 1994. Merchants are advised to clearly indicate the net weight of packaged goods, enabling customers to make informed choices and manage their expenses.
At the same time, the Consumer Affairs Division found that all inspected premises complied with Chapter 142 of the Price Control Act and its relevant regulations. The prices of controlled items, such as cooking oil and infant formula, remained within the stipulated maximum price limits. Upon inspection, the prices displayed on goods within these premises were found to be clear and accurate.
Merchants are advised to ensure that every weighing and measuring instrument used in business transactions is registered with the SDT office and complies with the Weights and Measures Act 1983, Chapter 151, and the Weights and Measures (Verification) Regulations 1994.
Failure to comply with or violation of any provision of the Act constitutes an offence and, upon conviction, is liable to a fine of BND 1,000 or three months' imprisonment, or both.
Merchants are also reminded to adhere to ethical standards, ensure that the prices of controlled items do not exceed the set maximum price, and make sure all pricing is clear and accurate to avoid misleading consumers.
