ASEAN Foreign Ministers Urge US and Iran to Continue Negotiations for Permanent End to Conflict

ASEAN foreign ministers held their second special online meeting on the Middle East situation that day, and welcomed the two-week ceasefire arrangement reached by the United States and Iran.

The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs reported on the 13th that, in a joint statement issued after the meeting, ASEAN foreign ministers pointed out that the Strait of Hormuz is crucial to global energy security, and called for navigation safety and smooth passage in the strait to be ensured in accordance with international law.

The statement urged all relevant parties to create conditions for a comprehensive and effective implementation of the ceasefire, including strict adherence to the terms of the ceasefire, exercising maximum restraint, stopping all hostile actions, and acting responsibly. It also called for the pursuit of a comprehensive and lasting solution on the basis of international law, the United Nations Charter, and relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

ASEAN foreign ministers further urged the US and Iran to continue to resolve the conflict permanently and achieve lasting peace and stability in the region through dialogue and negotiations, and expressed appreciation for the efforts made by Pakistan and all other relevant parties.
