AI as a Double-Edged Sword: Premier Urges Technical Measures to Prevent Misuse

(Kuching, 15th) Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari stated that technical measures are needed to prevent the misuse of artificial intelligence.

While acknowledging the positive potential of AI advancements, he warned that irresponsible parties might exploit the technology for propaganda and political manipulation.

To illustrate such risks, he cited a hypothetical scenario where AI-generated content might depict him wearing a GPS party shirt while falsely urging people not to vote for the party.

“An AI-generated video shows my face, wearing a GPS party shirt, but saying ‘don’t vote for GPS’.”

Abang Johari raised this matter while speaking at the 16th triennial delegates conference of PBB today.

He warned that some individuals, driven by personal interests, would stop at nothing to seize power; hence, AI is like a double-edged sword and, if misused, could lead to severe consequences.

To counter these threats, he called for the development of counter-technologies to combat AI-driven misinformation and maintain the integrity of information.
