On the 25th, the South Korean special investigative team responsible for probing the emergency martial law incident filed an appeal against the first-instance verdict for former President Yoon Suk-yeol’s charge of ringleader of insurrection.
The special investigative team stated that the court’s first-instance verdict contained factual errors, misinterpretation of legal principles, and improper sentencing, thus they filed an appeal.
The special investigative team had earlier requested that the court sentence Yoon Suk-yeol to death.
For the same reasons, the special investigative team also filed appeals against the first-instance verdicts for other defendants, such as former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, who were prosecuted together with Yoon Suk-yeol on suspicion of insurrection.
On the 19th, the Seoul Central District Court announced that Yoon Suk-yeol was found guilty of being the ringleader of insurrection and was sentenced to life imprisonment in the first instance. On the 24th, Yoon Suk-yeol, through his legal team, issued a statement, stating that he had submitted an appeal against the first-instance verdict for his charge of ringleader of insurrection. Yoon Suk-yeol’s legal team said they would clarify the "factual errors and legal misunderstandings in the first-instance verdict," stressing that they would not remain silent.
