Xi Jinping Visits Vietnam, Calls for Joint Opposition to Hegemonism

On the evening of the 14th, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh at the central headquarters of the Communist Party of Vietnam, urging China and Vietnam to strengthen high-level exchanges, enhance strategic communication, jointly oppose hegemonism, unilateralism, and protectionism, jointly safeguard international fairness and justice, and maintain peace, stability, and prosperity in Asia and the world.

Pham Minh Chinh suggested that Vietnam and China continue to build a peaceful, friendly, cooperative, and developmental border line; jointly maintain maritime peace and stability to create a favorable environment for each other's development; and strictly adhere to high-level consensus, managing and resolving differences amicably, in the spirit of friendship and mutual respect, following international law, especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Starting from the 14th, Xi Jinping visited Vietnam, Malaysia, and Cambodia, three Southeast Asian countries, marking his first overseas visit this year. On the 14th, he met successively with General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, and Chairman of the National Assembly of Vietnam Vuong Dinh Hue.

Call for Cooperation in Technology and Key Technical Fields

In the afternoon, Xi Jinping had talks with Nguyen Phu Trong. According to a report by the Vietnam News Agency, Trong emphasized that the Vietnamese party and state have always regarded the development of relations with China as an objective requirement, strategic choice, and top priority in Vietnam's overall foreign policy.

Trong suggested that both sides promote digital transformation and technological cooperation as a new highlight in Vietnam-China relations, enhance cooperation in key technical fields, promote more balanced trade, and higher quality investment, prioritize large and representative projects and schemes in Vietnam, and assist Hanoi and major cities in addressing air pollution issues.

Xi Jinping said that choosing Vietnam as the first stop of this year's visit fully reflects the great importance that the Chinese party and state attach to Vietnam-China relations and the profound feelings between the two countries.

Xi Jinping expressed that both sides should persist in deepening strategic mutual trust, proposed deepening the cooperation between the Belt and Road Initiative and "Two Corridors and One Belt"; welcomed more Vietnamese products to enter China and encouraged more Chinese enterprises to invest in Vietnam; strengthen cooperation in production and supply chains, and expand cooperation in high-tech fields such as 5G, artificial intelligence, and chips.

China and Vietnam Should Strengthen Confidence in Their Paths and Systems

In the evening, Xi Jinping also met with the Chairman of the National Assembly of Vietnam Vuong Dinh Hue.

During the meeting, Xi Jinping stated that facing the intertwined international situation of change and turmoil, China and Vietnam must strengthen confidence in their paths and systems, enhance solidarity and cooperation, and continuously deepen the construction of the China-Vietnam community with a shared future, which carries strategic significance, and work together towards modernization, injecting more stability and positive energy into the world.

Xi Jinping emphasized that as socialist countries led by communist parties, China and Vietnam's political direction is crucial to the future and fate of their parties and states. The high-level leaders of the two parties and countries should promptly exchange views on bilateral relations and major issues of common concern to continuously build consensus, enhance mutual trust, maintain the correct direction, and ensure the stable forward progress of China-Vietnam relations. The two sides should continue to maintain exchanges and cooperation between party organizations, legislative bodies, and political consultation organizations and deepen exchanges on governance experience.
