Preventing Child Abuse and Neglect is Everyone’s Responsibility

(Sri Aman, 3rd) Child protection should not be borne solely by the government, but is a shared responsibility of all levels of society.
Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, Dato’ Sri Nancy Shukri, stated that if the public continues to remain indifferent and uninvolved, the issue of child abuse and neglect will be difficult to eradicate.
“Children are entrusted to us, they are the future inheritors of our nation. However, many children still fall victim to abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
These are not just cold statistics — these are real life stories that require each of us to take action.” This was her statement during the launch of the “Child Protection Awareness Program: KASIH Children” at the Sri Aman Children Activity Centre (PAKK) this Saturday.
She pointed out that the pain suffered by children is often silent, hidden behind the walls of their homes, shrouded by fear and stigma, making community intervention all the more important.
The event commenced at 1pm, bringing together multiple government agencies and the local community to strengthen advocacy and awareness for children’s rights and protection.
According to data from the Social Welfare Department (JKM), a total of 685 cases of child abuse and neglect were recorded in Sarawak from January to June 2025, with Sri Aman alone accounting for 40 cases — a shocking figure that urgently requires comprehensive action.
The KASIH Children Program, introduced since 2024, has so far reached more than 128,000 students in 337 schools nationwide.
In Sarawak, 5,589 students from 25 schools have participated in the program, which has now expanded to include multiple Children Activity Centre (PAKK) locations, including Sri Aman.
She also urged children who feel unsafe to seek help immediately from a trusted adult or call the 15999 “Talian Kasih” care hotline.
“Don’t be afraid to seek help. No one will blame you, and there are many people willing to support you.” she said.
She also reminded the public that, in cases of child abuse, we should not just be bystanders, but should report to the relevant authorities immediately, instead of merely spreading the news on social media.
