Temporary Center Regulations Set for September: Miri to Rectify Unlicensed Durian Stalls

(Miri, 26th) The Miri City Council is taking a serious stance on the unlicensed sale of fruits in the city, especially regarding durian vendors occupying public parking spaces, sidewalks, bus stops, and vacant lots behind shops for business, which has already caused obstructions to the city’s appearance and traffic, and even endangered public safety.
The city council pointed out that according to the Cleanliness Bylaw, Articles 18 and 26, any party placing personal items or goods in public places is in violation. Such acts not only damage the city’s appearance but also hinder road users, constituting a safety hazard.
For better regulation and management, the city council has set up the “Pruet Jaya Temporary Hawker Center”, which will officially open on September 1st as the designated site for selling durians and other seasonal fruits. By then, all other seasonal fruit stalls in unauthorized locations will be strictly dealt with.
The council’s enforcement team has already begun patrolling, issuing warnings to relevant vendors, reminding them that they must first apply for a business license from the city council and may only conduct business at the designated location. Meanwhile, enforcement officers have also urged vendors to maintain environmental cleanliness and not to leave personal items in public areas.
The city council emphasized that should vendors ignore these warnings and continue to operate without licenses or sell at unauthorized locations, enforcement units will carry out confiscation actions without compromise.
