(Singapore, 23rd) – The northeastern United States has been struck by a powerful blizzard, forcing the cancellation of more than a thousand flights, with multiple Singapore Airlines flights to and from New York affected.
Singapore Airlines announced late Saturday night (Feb 21) on its official website that due to the blizzard in New York, a total of 12 flights to and from John F. Kennedy International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport have been canceled. The affected flights were originally scheduled to depart between Sunday (22nd) and next Tuesday (24th), local time.
According to the announcement, the canceled flights include SQ23 and SQ24 to and from Singapore and JFK, as well as SQ21 and SQ22 to and from Singapore and Newark Airport. In addition, flights SQ25 and SQ26—serving Singapore and JFK via Frankfurt, Germany—have also been suspended.
Singapore Airlines will contact all affected passengers to arrange alternate flights or provide full ticket refunds. SIA also cautions that, as weather conditions remain unstable, other flights may also be affected. Passengers are encouraged to check the flight status page for the latest updates.
According to media reports, the powerful winter storm hit the US East Coast on Sunday Eastern Time, expected to bring heavy wet snow, with traffic likely to be severely paralyzed and large-scale power outages possible, potentially impacting up to 30 million people. The US National Weather Service predicts that snow accumulation in parts of the East Coast could reach up to 50.8 centimeters.
CNN reported that this is the first time since 2017 that New York City has issued a blizzard warning.
New York City Mayor Mamdani warned at a press conference on Saturday that this blizzard may be even more dangerous than the storm that hit New York at the end of January. He urged residents to stay indoors as much as possible and avoid going out unless absolutely necessary.
