The United States once again vetoed a draft resolution on the Gaza issue at the United Nations Security Council on the 18th.
The Security Council held a vote that day on a draft ceasefire resolution on Gaza submitted by 10 non-permanent members. The draft called for an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the immediate and unconditional release of all detained persons in a dignified manner, and demanded that Israel immediately and unconditionally lift restrictions on humanitarian aid entering and being distributed within the Gaza Strip.
Of the 15 members of the Security Council, 14 voted in favor, but the United States, a permanent member, exercised its veto, causing the draft resolution to fail.
Since the escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in October 2023, the U.S. has repeatedly vetoed draft Security Council resolutions regarding Gaza.
● China: Deeply Disappointed
China's permanent representative to the UN, Fu Cong, expressed that China is very disappointed with the result of the vote.
Fu Cong said that when the U.S. first vetoed a draft resolution on the Gaza issue in October 2023, the conflict had caused the deaths of nearly 3,000 people. Today, the U.S. has once again abused its veto, and the death toll in Gaza has soared to over 65,000. Force cannot bring peace, and violence cannot bring security. Prolonging the conflict will only result in more deaths and hatred. Israel must immediately halt its military operations in Gaza and cease any dangerous actions that could further escalate tensions.
China hopes the U.S. will move in the same direction as the international community, uphold a just and responsible stance, and genuinely make positive efforts to realize a ceasefire.
