The French presidential palace issued a statement on the evening of the 9th announcing that French President Macron has appointed Lecornu as the new Prime Minister, succeeding former Prime Minister Bayrou, who resigned after failing to pass a vote of confidence in the National Assembly.
The statement said that Macron has asked Lecornu to consult with the various political forces in parliament, with the aim of passing next year’s fiscal budget and laying the necessary groundwork for consensus in future decision-making.
Lecornu has served as Minister of Defense since May 2022 and is seen by French media as a loyal follower of Macron. Macron took office as president in May 2017, and a month later, Lecornu joined the cabinet and has served since then.
On the 8th, the government led by former Prime Minister Bayrou lost a vote of confidence in the National Assembly. On the afternoon of the 9th, Bayrou formally submitted his resignation to Macron.
