(Kuching, 10th) In conjunction with the National Journalists Day 2025 to be held in June, the Sarawak government will host the Sarawak Media Conference (SMeC).
Datuk Abdullah Saidol, Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier's Department (Corporate Affairs, Information and Public Relations Unit), stated that the Sarawak level National Journalists Day will also feature sports events to enhance the atmosphere. These events will see participation from media practitioners and will involve the regions of Kuching, Sibu, and Miri.
He mentioned that the Sarawak Public Relations Unit (UKAS) will jointly form the Sarawak Media Conference and National Journalists Day working committee with local media strategic partners this year.
“The theme of this media conference will focus on media development, particularly the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The Sarawak Media Conference will invite external speakers, and the main topic will be the impact of artificial intelligence on various aspects of the media. Some have suggested discussing the role of radio broadcasting, as we do not want radio to become a ‘sunset’ media platform.”
He said this in an interview with reporters after attending the Sarawak Public Relations Unit's Hari Raya gathering yesterday afternoon.
At the same time, Abdullah Saidol also emphasized that the Sarawak Media Conference will not only focus on journalists but will also discuss the roles of editors, publishers, and creative individuals contributing to the journalism industry.
“Although Sarawak is not the host for the National Journalists Day 2025, we will continue to hold several significant events, such as the Sarawak Premier presenting special awards to several journalists and showing appreciation to veteran journalists.”
Additionally, he revealed that the Sarawak Public Relations Unit intends to establish collaborations with higher education institutions offering mass communication courses.
