UN General Assembly Supports Advancing the Israel-Palestine 'Two-State Solution,' Excludes Hamas Participation

The United Nations General Assembly on the 12th passed a resolution supporting efforts toward an Israel-Palestine 'two-state solution,' but excludes Hamas from participation, a move Israel has condemned as a shameful act.

According to AFP, the resolution was adopted with 142 votes in favor, 10 votes against—including Israel and the United States—and 12 abstentions.

This resolution explicitly condemns Hamas and demands that the armed group surrender its weapons.

The official name of the resolution is the "New York Declaration on the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and Implementation of the Two-State Solution." It clearly states that "Hamas must release all hostages," and the General Assembly condemns "the attack carried out by Hamas against civilians on October 7, 2023."

The resolution also calls for “collective action to end the war in Gaza and achieve a just, peaceful, and lasting resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict based on the two-state solution.”

Israel: Encourages Hamas to continue the war

Israel, however, criticized the Assembly’s vote to support the establishment of a “Palestinian state without Hamas” as a shameful act, saying it would encourage the armed group to continue the war.

Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lior Haiat posted on social platform X: “This resolution does not advance a peaceful solution; on the contrary, it encourages Hamas to continue the war. Israel thanks all the countries that did not support this disgraceful decision in the Assembly.”
