(Kuching, 9th) Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof stated that the proposal to increase the number of seats in the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly is expected to be tabled and discussed at the Dewan Rakyat (Lower House of Parliament) meeting this July.
He said, “We will only know the related developments when it is tabled in Parliament.” He made these comments to the media after attending an event in Kuching on Sunday (March 8th).
This proposal to increase seats is closely related to the implementation of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), with one of its objectives being to ensure more balanced representation for Sarawak and Sabah in the Dewan Rakyat.
Fadillah, who is also the chairman of the MA63 Implementation Technical Committee, stated that this matter has been discussed in consultations between the federal government and the Sarawak government.
In July last year, the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly passed a bill proposing to increase the number of state seats from 82 to 99, but this proposal still needs to obtain parliamentary approval before it can take effect.
Earlier, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah and Sarawak Affairs) Datuk Armizan Ali stated that the Election Commission is currently studying Sarawak's proposal to increase the number of state seats and hopes the relevant process can be accelerated.
Prior to this, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Azalina Othman Said stated in a written reply in the Dewan Rakyat on March 3 that the proposal to increase Sarawak’s state seats requires further study, as it would have significant impacts on other states in Malaysia.
She added that at the MA63 Implementation Action Council meeting scheduled for September 12, 2025, it was agreed in principle to increase the number of parliamentary seats for Sarawak and Sabah, and said that the federal government has also agreed in principle to the increase of parliamentary seats for the two states.
