Trump Steps Up Pressure on China; Russian Deputy Prime Minister: Ready to Supply Aircraft Parts to China

U.S. President Trump reminded China that Washington holds powerful leverage over Beijing with respect to aircraft parts and other aspects. Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov stated that Russia is ready to supply parts for Chinese wide-body aircraft, including composite-material wings and heavy engines.
On Saturday (September 6), Manturov was asked whether there are plans to supply parts for Chinese wide-body aircraft.
According to Russia’s Sputnik News Agency, Manturov responded: “We are ready to make such supplies, primarily in areas where we excel, including under the MS-21 project (a medium-range jet airliner produced by Russia’s Irkut Corporation). We're talking about a composite-material wing and a heavy engine based on the PD-35 gas generator, with a thrust of 26 tons.”
He continued: “This engine is now being developed for the IL-100 (military transport aircraft), and may also be an engine option for the future MS-21-500 and MS-21-600 aircraft—these two models will also use the PD-26 engine.”
Manturov also pointed out that there are alternative supply options, but the decision will be made by the Chinese partner.
Previously, on August 25, Trump told reporters that in the ongoing trade dispute, China must supply the U.S. with rare earth magnets, otherwise “we’ll put a 200% tariff or something of that nature on them.”
Trump continued: “We're paying close attention to the (rare earth) magnet issue now, and this is entirely for national security reasons... But we also have powerful leverage, which is aircraft parts and lots of Boeing planes.”
Trump claimed that, due to China’s policies regarding rare earth magnets, if the U.S. were to stop supplying Boeing parts to China, 200 Chinese aircraft would be grounded. “I’ve been sending them all the parts so their planes can keep flying... I could have held things up, but I didn’t, because I have a very good relationship with them. Now all their planes are flying.”
