46 Large Garbage Bins Set Up Before Festival, Citizens Call for Strict Punishment of Illegal Construction Waste Dumpers

(Miri, 29th) Miri residents praised the City Council for placing large garbage bins in 46 communities across the city before the festive season, helping to handle the large amounts of waste generated from household 'spring cleaning.' This not only effectively eases garbage disposal pressure but also significantly improves the overall cityscape of the tourism city.

Residents pointed out that this move allows households to centrally and properly dispose of bulky and miscellaneous waste, avoiding random dumping, improving environmental hygiene, and having a positive effect for both welcoming the festival and the arrival of tourists.

Looking back at last year before the Chinese New Year, as the mayor was abroad on official business, the relevant group from the City Council hastily decided to stop providing large garbage bins before the festival. As a result, garbage piled up like mountains and foul smells spread across both urban and rural areas of Miri, severely damaging the city's appearance and posing a threat to public health.

In response, Mayor Yu Xiaoshan recently announced that the City Council will place large garbage bins in 46 areas in Miri from February 2 to February 15, coordinating with community spring cleaning activities ahead of the Lunar New Year to ensure smooth garbage disposal.

However, citizens also condemn a minority of contractors who, in order to save costs, take the opportunity to dump construction waste next to the public large garbage bins, instead of transporting it to designated sites specified by the City Council. They urge the authorities to strengthen law enforcement and strictly punish violators in order to avoid affecting the overall cleanliness outcome.
