(Hanoi, 16th) Vietnam has officially joined the BRICS cooperation mechanism, becoming the 10th partner country. Vietnam's inclusion will further enhance the strength of BRICS in Asia and promote regional cooperation and exchange.
Vietnam's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pham Thu Hang said on Saturday (14th June) that after becoming a BRICS partner country, Vietnam hopes to enhance the representation and voice of developing countries in international affairs, promote more inclusive multilateralism and international solidarity, while insisting on respecting and adhering to the fundamental principles of international law.
During a press conference when asked about becoming a BRICS partner country, she said: "Vietnam consistently upholds an active, comprehensive, deep, and effective approach to international integration, and has always played a constructive role in major multilateral mechanisms, making positive contributions to promoting peace and stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world."
This year's rotating BRICS presidency, Brazil, announced on Friday (13th) the formal acceptance of Vietnam as a BRICS partner country.
The Brazilian government stated that Vietnam is an important participant in the Asian region and is committed to South-South cooperation and sustainable development, which aligns with the interests of the BRICS countries.
Currently, among Southeast Asian countries, only Indonesia is a member of BRICS, with two other partner countries, Malaysia and Thailand.
BRICS was established in 2009, with founding countries being Brazil, Russia, India, and China. Obtaining partner country status is an important step towards becoming a formal member of BRICS.
