(Kuala Lumpur, 13th) Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, during a meeting with Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Herath, said that China is a trustworthy partner of Sri Lanka and criticized the “Indo-Pacific Strategy” for provoking bloc confrontation and coercing parties to take sides, stating that it will not gain the support of regional countries.
According to the official website of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Wang Yi met with Herath in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday (July 12). Wang Yi said that China and Sri Lanka enjoy traditional friendship. In January this year, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Sri Lankan President Dissanayake held fruitful talks, reaching important consensus on deepening the China-Sri Lanka strategic cooperative partnership and jointly building a China-Sri Lanka community with a shared future, thereby providing direction and guidance for the development of China-Sri Lanka relations.
Wang Yi stated that China is willing to work together with Sri Lanka to promote the sincere, mutually supportive, and enduring strategic cooperative partnership between the two countries.
Wang Yi stressed that China is a trustworthy partner of Sri Lanka and that both sides should deepen high-quality Belt and Road cooperation as well as practical cooperation in various fields. He further noted the need to jointly implement the two flagship projects—Colombo Port City and Hambantota Comprehensive Development—and to accelerate negotiations on the China-Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement, creating new growth points for cooperation in green energy, digital economy, modern agriculture, and the marine economy.
Wang Yi also said that China-Sri Lanka maritime cooperation is mutually beneficial and not targeted at any third party nor should it be disturbed by any third party.
Wang Yi stated that China is willing to strengthen coordination and cooperation with Sri Lanka on platforms such as the ASEAN (referred to as East Asia by China) Regional Forum to jointly maintain the stability and development of the region.
Wang Yi further criticized that the so-called “Indo-Pacific Strategy” stirs up bloc confrontation and coerces parties to take sides, which does not conform to the trend of the times and will not gain the support of regional countries.
As China-U.S. competition continues to intensify, the United States in recent years has been actively promoting the “Indo-Pacific Strategy” to counter China.
