“Born in Southeast Asia” Accused of Discrimination, Zhang Linghe Issues Bilingual Apology

Chinese hit drama “Chasing the Jade” star Zhang Linghe, 28, is currently one of the hottest rising actors. Unexpectedly, a recent comment he made on a variety show has been accused of regional discrimination, sparking backlash from Southeast Asian viewers. In response, Zhang Linghe issued an apology on the 10th.

On a recent episode of the variety show “Hello Saturday,” Zhang Linghe commented on a simple drawing done by Tian Xuwei, the female lead of “Chasing the Jade,” saying: “Who does this look like? I feel like someone born in Southeast Asia.” This remark was perceived by some overseas viewers as discriminatory, leading to a wave of negative responses. The show has now deleted that segment.,
Zhang Linghe apologizes.
In response, Zhang Linghe posted a bilingual statement (in Chinese and English) in the comments section of his latest IG post on the 10th, apologizing for the discomfort his remarks in the show had caused viewers: “I want to clarify here that every culture has its own unique charm; I absolutely had no intention of discrimination.” He also mentioned that over the years, many fans from Southeast Asia have supported him, which he deeply appreciates. “I do not want anyone who supports or likes me to feel sad because of this.”

After Zhang Linghe’s apology statement was released, some fans expressed understanding, hoping he would be more cautious when discussing similar topics in the future; others believed that Zhang Linghe’s comment was not ill-intentioned and might have been blown out of proportion. Some netizens, however, pointed out that Zhang Linghe only posted his apology in a comments section, making it seem rather insincere.
