(Miri, 6th) Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari stated that the Sarawak government will develop a residential area in Padang Kerbau, Miri, to provide a safe settlement for residents still living by the riverside.
He said, I have approved an allocation of RM200 million for the first phase of development for this plan, similar to the Darul Hana residential area in Kuching. The government will fully develop this 200-acre residential area located in the city center of Miri, and the first phase of construction will develop 50 acres to build 200 houses.
The Premier made this statement during his speech at the Raya dinner hosted by the PBB Party’s coalition of five branches in Miri last night.
He pointed out that the Sarawak government will fully cover the costs of earthworks, water and electricity infrastructure installation, roads, and concrete drainage for this project. Additionally, the Sarawak government is providing a down payment of RM10,000 to make it easier for people to own their own homes.
He also mentioned that the Sarawak government will develop a Resort Township in the Beraya area in phases, with all construction costs borne by the Sarawak government.
“The overall development plan for this resort town will involve several other development projects, including an administrative center, residential areas, an international school, commercial areas, hotels, and a marina for yachts and boats, and it is anticipated that the project will take at least 10 years to complete.”
He said that Beraya, located between Miri and Niah, is a strategic area for driving development in the Subis region, which includes Lambir, Bekenu, and surrounding areas. The modernization of these areas will attract investors and the local community.
He also stated that the Sarawak government plans to provide free education at local universities by 2026, which is in no way a burden but a long-term investment aimed at cultivating highly skilled Sarawakian children.
“Although this plan is costly, the government is confident in fully shouldering these expenses, and not only does it offer free tuition to the people of Sarawak, but an additional RM15,000 annually for every student pursuing further studies at university.”
He continued, If we have 10,000 students, I estimate it will cost RM700 million annually, including the previous 'pocket money,' but this will not burden the Sarawak government because we are doing this for our children.
“Emphasizing the importance of education, education not only changes their standard of living but also cultivates Sarawakian children proficient in exploring new fields, thereby forming a community capable of competing in the new economy.”
