Free Meal Subsidy or Raise: Prabowo Urges Budget Review

(Jakarta, 16th) Indonesian President Prabowo has instructed the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) to reassess the per-person meal budget for the "Free Nutritious Meal" (MBG) program, to examine whether the allocation of 15,000 Indonesian rupiah (about $0.83 USD) per recipient is sufficient, and to adjust the budget if necessary.

Agustina, Deputy Head of the National Nutrition Agency, stated that during a meeting with agency officials at the Presidential Palace on Wednesday, Prabowo requested a comprehensive evaluation by the relevant departments, and if the current allocation is insufficient, a new budget proposal should be submitted.

She pointed out that the President's aim is to ensure the effective implementation of this key national program so that the free nutritious meal initiative can continue to benefit its target groups.

Addressing concerns that the government may cut overall funding, Agustina said that discussions and financial calculations are still ongoing, and no final decision has been made yet.

According to the current funding standards, the meal budget is 8,000 rupiah per person for students from kindergarten to third grade, and 10,000 rupiah per person for students from fourth grade to high school.

The above amounts do not include an operating cost of 3,000 rupiah per person and a facilities fee of 2,000 rupiah per person.
